      Like most rodents, the Hazel Dormouse uses hearing as their main sense, along with scent. Although they have quite good eyesight, being nocturnal it is much better at night than during the day. They use their sense of smell to navigate, but it is also very important for finding food, especially fruit and whether it is going to be any good or not.

      I have to! We cranes use our hearing and vision rather than sense of smell to detect predators, food and other cranes.

      Sharks are most famous for their excellent senses of smell and electroreception but you might not know that sharks also have superb hearing. Their hearing is not quite the same as in land vertebrates though. In addition to their inner ears, sharks have a complex lateral-line system running from their head to tail which is used to sense vibrations in the water. This allows them to effectively ‘hear’ with their whole bodies.
