Snails like to withdraw into their shell because it is their home – they are protected from damage and won’t dry out if the sun comes out. They also go into their shell when they are attacked by a bird. Of course, their shell isn’t always strong enough – especially if you stand on one by mistake.

Did you know that slugs are just snails without a shell? Instead of hiding in their shell, they crawl under rocks or into the soil to escape being attacked or drying out.
