Dragonflies are amongst the fastest insect fliers – the Guiness Book of Records lists a dragonfly as the fastest flying insect on earth (an Australian species called Austrophlebia costalis) that was clocked at 96 kilometres an hour – but this measurement was from 1927 so might be disputed. I know that Emperor Dragonflies can easily outrun me – the only way I can get close to them is to hope they think my net is something good to eat and come and have a look!
